HISTORY OF THE FISH SYMBOL
The fish symbol originated from the Greek word for fish, “ichthys/ichthus.” It is defined in the acrostic IXNYy, representing the phrase, “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, is Savior.”
I – Iota or Iesous (which means Jesus)
X – Chi or Christos (which means Christ)
N – Theta or Theou (which means God)
Y – Upsilon or Yidos/Huios (which means Son)
y – Sigma or Soter (which means Savior).
· During the time of great Christian persecution by the Romans, believers used the symbol of the fish to indicate to other believers that they were followers of Christ. Basically, it was used to identify a person as either a Christian or someone looking to persecute Christians.
· When two people would encounter each other, the Christian would draw the first half of the fish in the sand. If the other person correctly drew the remaining half of the fish, the Christian knew that person was a fellow Christian. If the other person didn’t finish drawing the fish, it would simply look as though the Christian was innocently drawing in the sand.
· The fish symbol was also used among Christians in hiding to secretly communicate to others where to meet and worship. They could be spotted on trees, doorways, even tombs.
